The Festival of Karwa Chauth

Karwa Chauth is just around the corner, and every woman is busy with their preparations for the festival. But what exactly is Karwa Chauth?

Karwa Chauth is one of the most important fasts kept by Hindu women, mainly in the northern parts of the country. Seeking the long life and prosperity of their husbands, married women fast the entire day. The spend the day in the company of friends and relatives being pampered. Both mother-in-law and mother lavish women with gifts, clothes, and jewellery.

"Karva" refers to a clay pot while "Chauth" means fourth. This refers to the day when Karwa Chauth is celebrated, which is the fourth day following the full moon. Karwa Chauth also coincides with the autumn harvest. In the days gone by, the festival also marked the emergence of autumn. People tend to visit friends and relatives during this period.

Significance of Karwa Chauth

On Karwa Chauth, married women observe the nirjala fast during which they do not eat from sunrise till they spot the moon. Not even a drop of water touches the lips. The fast should be observed with dedication should they choose to follow.

Married women wake up early in the morning before sunrise and bathe before performing the puja. Before starting the fast, they eat sargi, a nutritious meal consisting of dry fruits, nuts, and vermicelli. The mother-in-law prepares sargi for the women. After having sargi, women are not allowed to eat or drink anything until the moon rises. Once the moon rises, they see it through a sieve and then seek the blessings of the husband. They pray for the well being and safety of their husbands. After this, they are allowed to end their fast.

Karwa Chauth Puja

Though Karwa Chauth has been followed for a long time, it has gained traction only in recent times, due to TV shows and movies. It might sound glamorous, with all the dressing up complete with mehndi and jewellery, but there is a whole lot of religious puja and traditions behind it. If you are observing Karwa Chauth this year, you better do it the right way.

After their early morning bath, women perform a puja where they take a pledge called "Sankalp". They promise to fast the entire day for the well being of their husbands. Women spend the day visiting friends and relatives; they also decorate their hands and feet with mehndi. By afternoon, they gather together, and an elderly relative recites the story of Karwa. The gathering is complete with a metal urn, flower, and idols of Lord Ganesha, Goddess Parvathi. Grains, mathi, and fruits are offered to the Gods. During the puja, women light the lamp in their thalis.

After sunset, the Karwa Chauth puja is performed during the Sandhya time. Once the moon is sighted, women see the moon through a sieve or a dupatta. The fast is broken then with the first morsel of food being fed by their husbands.

Know The Story Behind Karwa Chauth: The Legends of Karwa Chauth

Women all over the country starve themselves on Karwa Chauth. Husbands make sure they are on time back home to help her break the fast by feeding her the first morsel of food. It is also essential that you know the story behind it. Here are the legends that started it all.

Queen Veeravathi

Veeravati, the beautiful sister of seven loving brothers, is married to a king. She celebrates her first Karwa Chauth in her parent’s place. Never having observed the fast, she was desperate for the moon to rise. Not able to bear her troubled state, her brothers tie a mirror to a pipal tree, thereby reflecting light. Veeravati, in her distress, takes it for the moon and breaks the fast.

The moment Veeravati breaks her fast, she receives news that her husband, the king, is gravely ill. The queen rushes to the palace; On the way, she meets Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. Goddess Parvathi tells her that she broke her fast to a false moon. Repenting her deeds, Veeravati asks for forgiveness. Parvathi grants her a boon that her husband would live, but the queen needs to undertake the fast of Karwa Chauth again following the strict rituals. Veeravati follows the Goddess’s edict and revives her husband, the King.

Legend of Karwa

The other famous legend is that of Karwa, who is dedicated to her husband. One fateful day, her husband is bitten by a crocodile. Karwa, hearing her husband’s screams tie the crocodile with cotton yarn. She then visits Lord Yama and requests him to send the crocodile to hell. When Yama refuses, she threatens to curse him. Lord Yama knowing that she is pativrat, sends the creature to hell and blesses her husband with a long life.

Satyavan and Savitri

Satyavan and Savitri also feature in the legends of Karwa Chauth. When Lord Yama comes to take Satyavan’s life, Savitri begs him to spare her husband, Yama refuses; Henceforth, Savitri rejects food and water. Looking at her devotion, Yama grants her a wish that can be anything but her husband’s life. She requests the Lord of Death to bless her with children. Yama, impressed by her devotion, brings her husband Satyavan back to life.

Karwa Chauth in Mahabharata

Karwa Chauth dates back to the Mahabharata era; Hence, it makes an appearance in the epic too. Draupadi is said to have followed this fast. While Arjun was in the Nilgiris for penance, the Pandavas faced too many problems and struggled. Hopeless, Draupadi seeks Lord Krishna for help. Krishna reminds Draupadi of Goddess Parvati. The Goddess had sought Lord Shiva’s guidance in a similar situation and was suggested to follow Karwa Chauth by Lord Shiva himself.

Draupadi follows the instructions and observes Karwa Chauth along with its strict rituals. Thereupon, the Pandavas were able to solve all their issues. And that is credited to Draupadi, who followed Karwa Chauth with such devotion.
