How to Bake a Cake: Step by Step Guide

Here are all the steps you need to follow to make a basic vanilla cake:

If you are baking beyond a basic cake, then, of course, some elements and steps will vary a little, with some additions. The frosting will also differ then, and depending upon the cake you are making, you can frost it accordingly.

Ingredients:

  • 100 grams flour
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 110 grams granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup vegetable oil
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract.

Procedure:

  • Start with getting your ingredients ready. This means make sure you have everything you need for the recipe in correct order, and in the right measurements.
  • Preheat the oven to 350° F (180 C).
  • Get your Pan ready by adding a parchment paper on the bottom of the pan (make sure you have the right side), and then butter and grease the sides of your pan.
  • For the dry mix, whisk the flour, salt and baking powder together in a bowl.
  • In another now beat the eggs (make sure they come to room temperature before you use your eggs). Once the eggs are beaten, add sugar, oil, milk and stir until the sugar is dissolved. Once done, stir in vanilla extract to the same bowl.
  • Mix the ingredients in the two bowls in step 4 and 5 together to create a batter and stir with a fork until you have a smooth batter. Do not overbeat it, just make sure you do it till you get rid of all the big lumps.
  • Once the batter is ready, pour in the Pan and spread it evenly. Then put the pan in the oven and let it bake for 30 minutes. You can check on your cake on and off, check for the golden top, and you can also in between take a toothpick and insert it in the center of the cake. If the toothpick comes out clean, then it means your cake is ready.
  • After 30 minutes, take out your cake.
  • Let it rest and cool, add the final touches and voila, your cake is ready.

Bonus Tip: Things to Keep in Mind While Baking Your Favorite Cake

Making a Cake is something which not only needs certain steps to be followed, but there is a lot of details involved in every step, which means there is a lot of scope of error.

However, there are certain main elements which usually create an error when it comes to making a cake from scratch. We’ve listed all such things down, which will save you the trouble if you are extra cautious about it from the beginning.

Ingredients and Measurements Matter

Source britcdn.com

Both Ingredients and Measurements are the primary and the most crucial element of any recipe and both are equally important because both the elements exist mutually once you start with your recipe.

Make sure you have all the ingredients before you get started. If you are following a recipe, have all the ingredients ready, and if there is something you do not have, then do your research and have an alternative. If you are creating your own recipe, list down all the elements involved and the steps therein.

Similarly, measurement is also a very key element in cooking, especially baking. This is something that you must incorporate especially when you are following a recipe. This is because if you do not follow the measurements, the results will not be as flawless as the recipe itself.

Another additional tip is that it is always a better idea to have all your ingredients ready in the correct measurements before you start with the recipe because usually when following a recipe, there is a lot of hustle and that is when it feels easier to go by estimation rather than the actual measurement.

Focus on the Consistency

Another important element while making a cake is your Batter’s consistency, which can make or break your cake. It is important that your batter is of the right consistency - not under beaten or over beaten, just the right consistency.

To ensure that, make sure you follow the recipe correctly and understanding the consistency has a lot to do with how you whip the ingredients, and it is something you learn over time.

Good Finishing is Essential

The excitement of being done with so many steps involved in the making of a cake can sometimes leave a scope of error in the end. This is when your cake is in the oven and is almost baked.

Here are two things you should keep in mind to make sure your cake has the right finishing:

  • Let it rest: Once your cake is out of the oven, you need to let it rest and cool down before you frost it or cut it into slices.
  • Frost it right: A cake is defined by not only how it tastes but also how it looks, which means the frosting and presentation of it. Make sure your cake looks as good as it tastes, and keep the presentation nice and tidy to give someone a wholesome experience with your cake.
