How to Make Cakes Healthier?
Skip the Refined Flour
Cakes are one of the most indulgent foods and definitely not for the people who are trying to stay healthy or watching their weight. But health food enthusiasts have a found a way to make this ever popular dessert healthier. One way to make cake healthy is to skip the refined flour. White flour or refined wheat flour can cause multiple health problems like increased cholesterol levels and blood pressure. It can lead to heart problems and obesity. People with gluten allergy can’t consume white flour. Alternatively, you can use whole grain flours, oats, multigrain flours, almond meal or any other ground up nut like pistachio or cashews. Buckwheat flour is a healthy option and so is coconut flour. Quinoa is a super food and you can use quinoa flour to make cakes as well. It’s the healthiest option that you can find in fact.
Minimize the Use of Dairy or Find a Healthy Substitute
Some of the basic ingredients used to make a cake are dairy products. But replacing the dairy with something healthier or using fat-free or low-fat versions can make your cake healthier. Cheesecakes can be made healthier by replacing the cheese with a healthier option like Greek yogurt.
Avocados can give the creamy texture that frosting requires with a ton of healthy, heart loving fat. Butter is an essential ingredient in the cake. But instead of butter, you can also use olive oil, coconut oil or any other healthy oil, which is low in cholesterol. Instead of cream frosting, go for dark chocolate and avocado. Use skim milk instead of full fat.
You can also use almond, soy or coconut milk to make the cake completely dairy free. People who are lactose intolerant have trouble digesting dairy products. So substituting dairy with alternatives is the only way for them to enjoy the cake.
Use Healthy Toppings
Another way to make cake healthy is by adding healthy toppings. Fresh fruits are of course the most common and the healthiest option. Fruits like strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, cherries, passion fruit, kiwi, dragon fruit, orange and pineapple slices etc. not only look pretty but are super delicious. If fruits are not your thing then you can add dark chocolate shavings, raw cacao nibs, chopped roasted nuts and seeds. To make the frosting healthier skip the butter and add an alternative like cashew, peanut or almond butter. Instead of sugar, go for artificial sweeteners or maybe something natural like honey. Brown sugar or powdered jaggery is also healthier than refined white sugar. Raw cacao powder is also a great cake topper. Just finely dust it on top of the frosting for that fine chocolaty flavour. We would suggest that you avoid sprinkles and sugar flowers as these are made purely of refined sugar and food colouring which do nothing to benefit one’s health.
