Gharara Suits: Understanding this Graceful Traditional Attire Better
Gharara vs Sharara
Traditional attire like Shararas and Ghararas have come back in vogue and have become a trend on special occasions and wedding events. While both sound similar and are often swapped with each other, they are quite different from one another. While a Sharara is a pair of loose and wide-leg trousers typically worn with straight Kurtis or designer anarkalis with a dupatta as part of the ensemble, Gharara is a pair of trousers fitted from the waist to the knees with a thick band right above the knees, where the cloth is gathered to form a flare to the toes. While, a sharara is akin to modern-day wide-leg palazzos but embellished with sequins, stones, zari and beads, a gharara is worn with a short kurti and a dupatta also embellished with work similar to a sharara.
Fabric and Styling
Ghararas have their origin in Lucknow and were typically worn by Indian Muslim women with a mid-length tunic and paired with wide-leg pants gathered at the knee. The attire reflected the wearer’s social status back in those days. The gharara’s flare is marked with a decorated gota patti band to conceal the joint and is usually paired with a mid-thigh length kameez. As compared to a sharara, Gharara uses less fabric to tailor. The Gharara trousers/pants can be quite dramatic with each leg crafted with over 12m of fabric. For casual wear, cotton is much preferred, while for special occasions, fabrics vary from Silk to Georgette to Jamawaar Banarasi, Brocade and more.
Styling and Occasions to Wear
From times immemorial, trousers/pajamas have witnessed immense experimentation that includes shararas, ghararas, farshi pajamas and fararas, not to forget the modern-day Palazzos. While Farshi pyjamas look similar to Ghararas, they are a little loose on the thighs and gather a few inches below the knees where it starts flaring to the end, where it touches the floor. A Farshi is typically paired with mid-thigh length Kurti. In a Gharara, you can pair the pants with a long or short kurti or even an Anarkali. This attire is best for a wedding event as it exudes both elegance and ethnicity.
Embellished with delicate zari work, sequins, stones, beads, thread or zardosi work, since the Mughal era, Gharara used to have pure gold and silver work on it back in the Mughal era. Now, floral motifs are usually embroidered on Ghararas on fabrics like chiffon, silk, net or velvet. For bridal wear, Ghararas have a lot of dabka, gota or salma work. Ghararas are usually in vogue during the wedding season for functions like mehendi or Qawaali nights, etc.

Bonus Tips: Latest Trend in Gharara Styles
A traditional outfit, a Gharaa comes with a pair of wide-legged trousers, fitted from the waist to the knees and pleated at the knee to culminate into a natural flair and like any other outfit, this attire too has evolved in it design, choice of colour and fabric over the years. Here are some latest trends in Gharara Style:
- Colours – While wine and burgundy are popular for festive occasions, pastel hues like dove grey, pale pink or mint are quite the highlight. Nude is the new black and colors like parfait, beige and pecan are back in style. In the same breath, vibrant colors and machine crafted designs continue to rule the fashion element giving the outfit its dainty, yet urban and diverse appeal.
- Style – Gharara’s knee bit is adorned with colorful and ethnic designs and patterns crafted in zari or zardosi work which enhances the glam quotient, giving off a royal look. Embroidered heavy with intricate detailing, this 12 metered fabric flares out like a wave with a crimpling effect on the knee. Often confused as Farshi Pajama, the Gharara differs in terms of its length and designing both at the top and on the bottom. While the kurata in former may be ankle length, the kurta in a Gharara set extends only till the knees. The bottom of the Farshi pajama is long with uninterrupted flow, flaring out at the bottom, while in the latter the pleats at the knees create a broader flare.
- Creativity – Back in the days, the royal Ghararas were worn and shown off only during festivities or weddings, but over the years, their styling and make have transformed to the extent that they can now be worn in lighter fabrics and on casual occasions as well. Contemporary designs and prints in addition to modern needlework and embroidery have made headways into the basic styling of this outfit, making it universally popular.
- Fabrics – Apart from India, other international markets like in the Middle East, Pakistan and more identify the Gharara’s beautiful vibe and have started to connect with its traditional essence by wearing it on their festive occasions. Besides the heavy brocade and silk fabrics, the gharara was usually made in, now other fabrics like chiffon, crepe, satin, georgette and different types of silk fabric are also considered in its making.
- Accessorizing the Gharara– While weddings usually are the most popular way of showing off a Gharara’s beauty, innovative changes have redefined its personality, in terms of how it can now be worn for any formal or informal event. Keeping in mind the conventional styling and contemporary fashion appeal, a Gharara is best paired with gold plated jewelry or kundan jewelry, encrusted with semi-precious stones, precious gems or pearls. You can also experiment with delicate chains with pendants from a modern glam perspective.
