History and Importance of Father's Day

Father’s Day is an event to honour fathers and fatherhood, paternal love, fatherly bonds and the important role that fathers play in shaping and sometimes reshaping the society. Though fathers need to be respected and loved every single day of the year, but when the entire world is celebrating this day on the third Sunday of June every year; why not do something special for your father to make him feel loved and wanted. In India, kids are closer to their mothers and bonding and conversations with their fathers is a bit lesser in comparison. While in India it is celebrated on the 3rd Sunday of June as the idea comes from USA where it’s celebrated on the same day and was founded by Mr. Sonora Smart Dodd in the year 1910 in Washington in honour of his father, a war veteran. However, some countries like Croatia, Italy, Portugal, Spain, etc celebrate Father’s Day on March 19 every year.

How to Celebrate Father's Day

As this day falls on a Sunday, so you have the whole day to plan stuff to make it a memorable Father’s Day. It’s better to celebrate this day at home so that you get more time to spend with your father and give him undivided attention. Moreover, June is not a very good time to go hiking or picnic in a tropical country like India when mercury is touching 40°C.

There are various activities for Father’s Day and you can start with a brunch which includes his favourite dishes followed by a board game or a craft activity in which everyone is involved. You can also decorate his room with balloons and cards (don’t overdo it, so it can be cleaned easily) and arrange for few pints of different beers for him to taste. Plan to play the latest movie of his choice on your home theatre after the brunch and the entire family can enjoy it with popcorn or some light snacking in the evening. Afterwards, a long drive with the family and dinner at his favourite restaurant is a perfect way to wrap up the lovely day.

A DIY hand painted T-shirt is a perfect Father’s Day gift to show your creativity plus you can make it at home with ease.

Material Needed:

  • 1 solid dark coloured T-shirt
  • Bleach pen
  • Craft knife
  • Spray adhesive
  • Design template (you can use your creativity or use words like ‘My Daddy’, ‘Daddy – Est. 2010’, etc.)
  • 8.5 x 11 inch sheet vellum paper
  • 8.5 x 11 inch piece cardboard

Method:

  • To start with, print or sketch the desired design onto the vellum paper, place it on the cardboard and cut out the design on the cardboard with the craft knife.
  • Keep the inside part of each letter safely as it will be used later to complete the stencil of your design.
  • Now place the cardboard between the front and back part of the T-shirt so that it’s directly underneath the position of stencil.
  • Spray the stencil and the back part of the inside of each letters with the spray adhesive gently and evenly.
  • Now place the stencil across the front of the T-shirt, place the inside part of the letters in place and ensure that the letters are in the centre before smoothing the paper down on the T-shirt.
  • Fill the gaps between the letters using a bleach pen, applying generously so that it doesn’t get inside the edges.
  • Let the bleach dry or you can also use a hair dryer to speed up the process.
  • Once the bleach is completely dried, you can peel off the stencil by lifting it from one corner in an upward direction. Be careful so that any part of the stencil doesn’t touch the T-shirt while removing the stencil.
  • For any small fonts, you can carefully use the bleach pen and let it dry.
  • Now wash the T-shirt and let it dry in the shade and your DIY hand painted T-shirt is ready for gifting on Father’s Day.

Homemade Cake for Dad

To make a homemade cake for Father’s Day for your dad you need simple ingredients and most of them would already be present in your kitchen. The egg-less cake requires:

Ingredients:

For Cake:

  • 3 cup all purpose flour
  • ½ cup unprocessed cocoa powder
  • 2 tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp kosher salt
  • 1 tsp espresso powder
  • 2 cup brown sugar
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • ⅔ cup vegetable oil
  • 2 tbsp chocolate curls
  • 1 cup freshly brewed coffee
  • Non-stick cooking spray

For Frosting:

  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1 cup semisweet chocolate chips
  • 170 gm cream cheese
  • 1 tbsp granulated sugar

Method:

  • Preheat the oven to 350°C, keep two 8 inch cake pans with parchment paper and grease them well with cooking spray.
  • Take cocoa powder, baking soda, espresso powder, flour and salt in a large bowl and whisk to combine.
  • Now whisk coffee, buttermilk, brown sugar and vegetable oil in a medium bowl and mix well.
  • Pour the wet ingredients from the medium bowl into the big bowl which has the dry ingredients and whisk to combine (a few lumps is not a problem).
  • Now divide the batter equally in the two cake pans and cook for about 35 minutes and do a toothpick test. If the toothpick comes out clean, then the cake is cooked properly.
  • Take out from the pan after 15 minutes and keep it aside to cool down for about an hour.
  • For the layering on the cake, keep the chocolate chips in a ceramic cup, heat the heavy cream in a small pan on medium heat till you can see bubbles around the edges of the pan.
  • Now pour this hot cream over the chocolate chips and let it sit for a few minutes.
  • Stir gently until the sauce gets a uniform texture and keep aside to cool.
  • Beat the cream cheese in a medium bowl using a hand mixer till its fluffy and light.
  • Add sugar and beat again to mix properly. Add 5-6 tbsp of ganache and beat to incorporate well with the cream cheese.
  • Add a pinch of salt and slowly beat the remaining ganache until formation of soft peaks in the cream.
  • Now refrigerate the frosting mix for 30 minutes.
  • Moving to the final step i.e. building the cake, keep one cake over the other and level them using a knife.
  • Slice a thin layer from the top to get uniformity.
  • Dab a little amount of frosting mix in the centre of the serving plate to prevent the cake from sliding.
  • Place the first cake in the centre over the dab and top it with half of the frosting cream, now keep the second cake over it and cover the top with the remaining frosting.
  • Take a little amount of white cream in a cone and you can write ‘Happy Father’s Day’ or some other quotation over the cake.

Material Needed:

  • 1 large artist canvas board

Method:

Material Needed:

  • A lotion, shampoo or conditioner bottle (just check if the phone would slide easily, not too big or small)
  • Sand paper
  • Fabric with design
  • Sharp scissors
  • Craft adhesive

Method:

  • Wash the bottle with hot water, let it dry and then make a line in front with a ball pen or marker (after deciding how high you want the front to be) and continue the line to the back part of the bottle and then curve it back upwards (as shown in the image).
  • Cut out the part with a sharp scissors and you’ll be left with the shape of the phone holder.
  • Draw a curved box shape on the upper part of the bottle and take it out as well with the help of a sharp knife and scissors.
  • Now smooth out all the edges using sand paper.
  • Now before you start decorating the phone holder, sand the body completely so that no colour or letters are visible on the body of the holder.
  • Apply sticking adhesive on the container and wrap a beautiful fabric around it tightly and also downwards around the curve of the bottle.
  • Overlap one of the edges of the fabric over the other on the backside of the bottle and then cut a straight line up and trim off any extra fabric.
  • Continue trimming around the entire container so that the fabric is in line with the edges.
  • Cut an oval shape piece of the fabric and stick at the bottom of the container.
  • Let it dry and then cut out the square opening at the top with a sharp paper knife.
  • If required, apply more adhesive if there are any openings between the plastic and the fabric.
  • Take off any little pieces of fabric peeping out from the corners with paper scissors or knife and your holder for charging a cellphone is ready.

Method:
