What is a Mocktail Drink

Mocktail, also known as temperance drink, virgin cocktail, or boneless cocktail is a cocktail style non-alcoholic mixed drink. Cocktails gained popularity in the 80s and became famous in the 2000s, but the non-alcoholic party people were left with regular drinks like coke, lemon water, etc. The requirement of a new drink for the non-boozers gave rise to a new drink culture, which was termed as ‘Mock Cocktails’ because they would resemble in colour and are aesthetically appealing like a cocktail. This new segment, which was termed ‘Mocktail’ became quite popular in the 2000s and is on the menu card of almost every popular bar and restaurant today.

In simple terms, a mocktail is a smooth drink that is devoid of alcohol and is made using fresh fruit juices, cream, syrups, spices, and herbs, etc. These drinks can be enjoyed by people of any age group or people who refrain from alcoholic drinks at a party. Mocktails are also a good option for people who are trying to quit drinking alcohol, drivers (as they have to drive back home after a party), and pregnant women (for health reasons).

Difference Between Cocktail and Mocktail

A cocktail is a combination of many drinks with one or more alcoholic drinks. It can also be a combination of only alcoholic beverages and is mostly sipped in parties, pubs, bars, etc. In general, the main ingredients of cocktail include an alcoholic drink, a sour or bitter drink, and a sugary drink, but different variations have fruit juices, herbs, honey, fruits, and soda. Whereas, a mocktail may contain all the ingredients above minus the alcohol or spirit drink in it.

How to Make Grenadine Syrup at Home

Going by the dark red colour of Grenadine, many people believe that Grenadine is made from cherries. But, there is no role of cherries in this syrup, and it can be made at home with pomegranates. You would need 2 cups of pomegranate juice and an equal amount of sugar along with two drops of orange flower water.

To make the Grenadine Syrup, mix the pomegranate juice and sugar in a pan and begin to heat over the flame. Bring the mixture to boil and keep stirring until the sugar is dissolved completely. Cover the pan with a lid, reduce the heat and let it simmer for 10 – 15 minutes and stir occasionally.

Allow the mixture to cool and then pour it into a small bottle with a tightly sealed lid. Add two drops of orange flower water and seal the bottle. Now shake it well to mix all the ingredients uniformly, and your homemade Grenadine Syrup is ready to be enjoyed. You can use this Grenadine Syrup to make 12 to 24 drinks.
