Tips for Selecting Fancy Sarees
Fabric Choice
A woman’s best friend, the Saree not only accentuates her body but also builds on her self confidence in an unexplainable way! An element of sophistication, glamour and seduction, the 9-yard is a trending piece of clothing at every special occasion, be it a fashion launch, red carpet events, premier Bollywood duos and more. In that respect, your choice of saree fabric can enhance or mar your looks, as a wrong decision can make you look uncomfortable and attract attention for all the wrong reasons.
While the fabric net is in vogue and can be worn in practically every season, georgette is much better for summers while velvet shields you from the winter chill. Net sarees in subtle colours paired with heavy brocade blouses and contrast coloured huge borders are in fashion, while georgettes styled with dull gota or lace and thin borders bring out the timeless lightness of the fabric. Velvet sarees with ethnic brocade styling in intense colours look regal while cotton silks with contrast colored lycra blouses make the Fancy Saree Ensemble complete.
Body Type and Height
Your height and body weight ascertain the kind of saree you should wear. For instance, if you are tall, you’d easily don a designer saree or a Kanjeevaram. However, if your height makes you feel uncomfortable, then go for sarees with heavy borders or big prints to take the attention away from your height. For women with short builds, a saree with big prints and heavy work can go against their body type and make them look bulky. Raw silk sarees enhance the overall personality of a taller woman and sarees with heavy stone work, embellishments, zari work, embroidery or lacework is the perfect choice. Short and women with petite frames should opt for sarees with thin borders to appear taller, while small to medium sized prints can help enhance their personality.
Choice of Colour
The love for a saree’s versatility is quite evident in the way it has been designed. Designers, these days choose unusual hues before choosing their fabrics, the prints or the work would like to incorporate. From scorching yellows to ombre subtle orange shades, pure whites to bold blues, passionate pinks to blacks and browns, there’s a place for every colour under the sun in the genre of saree fashion. For the fair-skinned, bright coloured sarees bring out their best while for dark complexion darker hues look more glamorous and cheery. Picking the right coloured saree can enhance your personality and make you the star attraction.
Fancy sarees have spanned boundaries with sensuality and mysticism among varied age groups. While the pious whites are all-time winners in all fashion arenas, they aren’t really considered the first choice for Indian festivities as such. However, with subtle glamour and understated elegance the buzzwords these days, you’d find these colours coming up in a fusion of Indian and International fashion sensibilities. You will also find greys and other rarely preferred sober hues being flaunted in chic fashion sarees in the current scenario, while the earthy tones and metallic coppers/gold, beige and pleasant browns continue being popular in the ethnic domain.
Black is the eternal favourite, still considered mystical and magical, a party-perfect slimmer in a variety of fabrics and variants. Colours of love, hues of pink complement the Indian complexion and comes in myriad tints and shades while the vibrant and flaming colours of yellow and bright tangerines are boldly redesigning the fashion arena. The blue palette too isn’t far behind in the glam world.

Defined by different cultures and traditions, the styles have been evolving for years and here are a few listed for your benefit.
- Casual Drape – is the easiest to don and carry. You can use light weight sarees, net sarees or Pattu sarees draping them in a floaty or casual manner and securing the pallu with a brooch or a pin.
- Pleated Drape – is another common type mostly used for heavy designer sarees or Kanjeevarams where the pleated drapes come out perfect, while cotton sarees are the most elegant for this drape style.
- Pant Style Drape – is a trending style which is not only easy to wear but also quite glamorous. Ideal for cocktail duos and reception wear, this drape is bound to make you a Diva.
- Belted Saree Drape – is inspired by the Indian waist chain and now innovated with a thin, broad or even a fabric belt.
- Skirt/Lehenga Drape – is an interesting concept, with the saree draped uniquely over a skirt and ideal for weddings. You can also arrange your pleats across the waist and take the pallu the regular way, you can wear your saree with a Lehenga style drape.
- Dhoti Drape – is similar to the pant style saree with a heavy blend of tradition and modernism, popularized by Bollywood primarily.
- Retro Draping Style – works really well in chiffon and georgette saree fabrics with bling styling.
- Scarf Drape – can be quite a trend by donning your saree around your neck, making it look like a scarf. You could take it a notch higher for the glam quotient by adding a belt and some funky accessories.
- Cultural Drapes – While Gujarati drape is quite popular with a short or long pallu in Bandhani, Patola, Benarasi and Lehariya Sarees, the red & white sarees are equally famous for their Bengali drapes with keys dangling at the end of the pallu to make it look exotic! Washing Your Sarees
Restrain from washing your expensive sarees too often. In case you are washing them, let the first wash be in the saltwater. This helps the colour to stay for longer. Check for colour-bleeding by washing a part first. Use soap only for the later washes. Do not squeeze the fabric to remove excess water. Let it air dry. Wash one saree at a time, rather than mixing sarees together in the tub. Silk saree and zari embroidery sarees are best dry-cleaned.
