Introduction to Rooh Afza and How to Prepare It at Home
The entire India is whirling under a heat wave of scorching June at the moment. This definitely calls for a refreshing drink with Rooh Afza. Rooh Afza doesn’t need an introduction for Indians or Pakistanis. Rooh Afza is utterly popular among South Asian Muslims, particularly throughout the months of Ramadan, all through the summers. The formulation of the syrup is believed to be founded on the Unani system of healing; thus, it is healthy and cooling for the body.
If you do not know, Rooh Afza is a non-alcoholic syrup comprised of fruits (apples, oranges, blackberries, pineapples, etc.), vegetables (spinach, carrots, etc.), flowers, herbs, and roots with saccharine rose fragrance. The literal meaning of “rooh” is soul and “afza” is “refreshment”.
Given its traditions and its reputation among the Muslim community, Rooh Afza is merely used in non-alcoholic drinks or cocktails. It has a thick consistency, vibrant colour, and a lasting aftertaste of rose essence, coupled with hints of citrus. The sweet syrup leaves the user with a burst of flavours in the mouth for a long time. This is exactly why we’ve enumerated a plethora of mocktail recipes for you to relish in this scorching summer season.
If you’re facing trouble getting this syrup from the nearest store, don’t worry. Mentioned below is a recipe to develop the dye-free syrup (final quantity: 2 cups).

- Sugar: 2 cups
- Water: 1 cup
- Freshly squeezed beetroot: 3 tablespoons

When cooled, store the mixture in a glass bottle or jar with a lid at room temperature. The syrup is now ready. Store it in the refrigerator and use as needed.
