Chowpatty, Mumbai
Indian fast food contains a long list of lip smacking dishes. Each state has a different speciality which you can find in the streets of different cities. Apart from that, one same dish can have different taste in different cities. For example, pani-puri can be found everywhere in India but has a different taste in different states. It is also called 'golgappa' in Delhi and 'puchka' in Kolkata.
Well, talking about street food, Mumbai is the first city to pop up in anyone's mind. It has a lot of streets which serve some delicious food dishes. However, the most famous place is the Chowpatty. It has everything from bhel, pani-puri, sandwich to pav-bhaji.
Pav-bhaji is a very famous dish in Mumbai. It comes cooked with delicious vegetables and a lot of butter. Another item to try at Chowpatty is definitely vada-pav. It is a speciality of Mumbai and you might find it in every nook and corner in Mumbai. Chowpatty also offers different flavour of 'golas'. Do not forget to try the kala khatta one as it is very famous in Chowpatty.
Chandni Chowk, Delhi
The other street that is famous for its food is definitely Chandni Chowk in Delhi. People appreciate the food here as it has the right balance of spices and flavours. Some of the shops in Chandni Chowk are said to be almost 100 years old.
Chandni Chowk offers items like chole-bhature, stuffed parathas, aloo-chaat, golgappas and even jalebis. Each and every dish should be tried here. You can find stuffed parathas of potatoes, spinach, paneer, cheese and a lot more.
Most of the shops open in morning itself and serve breakfast. Kachori and aloo ki sabzi must be absolutely tried here in the morning for breakfast. Sarafa Bazaar, Indore
Indore's love affair with food is talked about in almost all foodie circles. It offers a lot of different delicacies and food options to choose from. Indore's Sarafa Bazaar is super famous and it opens at 8pm in the night. It is right behind the Rajwada Palace which is a jewellery market.
The market is almost 100 years old and sees some 3000 local and outside visitors everyday. You can expect to eat items like poha, jalebi, sabudana khichdi and bhutte ki kees in this market. Bhutte ki kees is a speciality which is made from grated corn. The corn is cooked in milk, coconut and spices.
Try the local bhutte ki kees which is topped with fresh coriander, coconut and lemon juice. The bazaar also offers varieties like garadu, malpua and khopra patties. There are all local dishes with unique flavour which should be tried when in Indore. Do not miss the jalebi of Indore which is a king sized jalebi cooked in desi ghee.
Park Street, Kolkata
Kolkata has some tasty delicacies in its list. The interesting part is that it is also famous for cheaper street food. It has some great kathi rolls to jhalmuri. Apart from that, it is also famous for different bengali sweets like rasgulla and sandesh.
Kolkata is also famous for its delicious puchkas. Papri chaat, dum aloo puchkas and dahi puchkas are something that you should not miss when in Kolkata. It is also a heaven for non vegetarians. Rotis stuffed with chicken keema or broken cutlets with onions and eggs are also famous in Park street.
You can also expect to have a nice cup of hot piping masala tea here. It can be had with hot samosas. Apart from that, you can also find some great momos here. Famous & Delicious Indian Fast Food
Chole Bhature
Chole Bhature is a very famous indian fast food delicacy. It is available in the northern parts of India. You can expect to find them in Delhi, Amritsar and other parts of Punjab. The bhatures are made of 'maida' and generally come in different sizes.
Chole is basically made out of chickpeas. The gravy usually contains garlic, tomatoes and onions. A blend of different spices and masalas are added while cooking the chole curry.
Chole Bhature is enjoyed with a raw onion salad and pickle. In the northern parts, people usually enjoy this dish with buttermilk or lassi. You can eat this dish in breakfast, lunch or dinner as it's pretty heavy. You can find chole bhature in places like Mumbai as well. Some places also serve kulchas with chole. Kulchas are basically soft breads.
Aloo Tikki Chaat
Aloo tikki chaat is again a famous dish from the north of India. It is made out of boiled potatoes and peas. The potatoes and peas are made in a form of tikki and are either fried or roasted. It is usually served with different chutney and sauces.
However, the dish is called 'ragada patty' in Mumbai. It is served with lentils gravy in addition to chutneys. It is available on various chaat stalls in Mumbai but can be widely found in Chowpatty. A lot of cafes have improvised this dish as they add it in sandwiches and grill it.
A lot of dhabas in Delhi also serve this delicacy. It is very famous there. Some of them also add aloo sev on top of this chaat to make it more tasty. Make sure that you try this delicacy on streets of Delhi and Mumbai.
Vada Pav
This dish is famous in Maharashtra. It can also be called the staple diet of people living in Mumbai as most of them have it in breakfast or in the evening as snacks. You can find stalls selling vada pav in almost every nook and corner of Mumbai.
The vada is made out of potatoes and chana flour and is fried. It is then put in between of a bun. The bun is roasted in butter or given dry. There are variations in vada pav as cheese can also be added in it.
It is served with two different chutneys. One is sweet and one is spicy. Many people also give a dry powder with vada pav which is usually spicy. Even green chillies are fried in oil and topped with salt and relished with the vada pav.
Kachori
Kachori is famous in Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh. People eat it in breakfast and snacks. It is also served as starters in famous restaurants of this region. It is usually served with different chutneys made of tamarind, mint and coriander.
The Bikaneri kachori is usually made out of lentils or onion. However, Rajasthan is also famous for its mawa kachori. It is usually a sweet dish which is dipped in sugar syrup. Kachoris are usually fried and contain many kinds of stuffings.
The streets of Delhi also serve a variant which is called as the Khasta kachori or the Raj kachori. In parts of Gujarat, you can find this kachori made out of flour and shaped in to a round ball. It contains stuffing of yellow moong dal, ginger paste, black pepper and red chili powder.
Pav Bhaji
Pav Bhaji is famous in Mumbai and can be found in parts of Gujarat and Delhi as well. Bhaji is made out of vegetables like peas, capsicum, potatoes, carrots and tomatoes. Some boil the vegetables and then add all the spices and masalas while some cook it together in the pressure cooker.
It is usually served with bun roasted in butter. You can also add cheese to the bhaji. It is usually served with raw onion salad and lemon. A chutney is also made of a dry powder and garlic which can be added in the bhaji to make it spicy.
You can also cook pav bhaji at home as it is very simple and easy to cook. It was originally invented by textile mill workers in Mumbai. They used to carry it for work as it was easy to cook yet nutritious. Another variant of the pav bhaji is fried pav bhaji which has pav tossed in the bhaji.
Indian Fast Food Recipes That are Easy to Cook
Sev Usal
Sev Usal is Gujarat's favourite fast food. It is available widely in all the cities of Gujarat. It is very easy to cook and you must try the recipe once.
- For usal
- 2 cups soaked safed vatana (dried white peas)
- Salt to taste
- 1 ½ tablespoon oil
- 1 teaspoon mustard seeds
- 1/4 teaspoon asafoetida
- 1/4 cup finely chopped onions
- 1/4 cup finely chopped tomatoes
- 1 ½ teaspoon chilli powder
- 1/2 teaspoon coriander powder
- 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
- 2 teaspoon finely chopped coriander
- 1 teaspoon lemon juice
- For topping
- 2 teaspoon garlic chutney
- 4 teaspoon green chutney
- 8 teaspoon sweet chutney
- 4 tablespoon boiled and chopped potatoes
- 4 tablespoon finely chopped onions
- 2 tablespoon grated carrot
- 2 tablespoon finely chopped coriander
- 4 tablespoon sev
- Boil the vatana in a pressure cook. Add some salt and cook it until three to four whistles.
- Let the steam escape, then open the pressure cook. Strain the water and keep them aside.
- Heat oil in a pan and then add Asafoetida with mustard seeds. Add onions and saute on medium flame for a minute.
- Add tomatoes and cook for 2 to 3 minutes. Add chilli powder, coriander powder, turmeric powder, salt and ½ cup of water. Cook it properly and stir occasionally.
- Add the cooked vatana, coriander, lemon juice and ½ cup water. Cook it properly for 5 to 7 minutes and stir occasionally.
- Then, add a portion of ragda in a serving bowl and top it up with ½ tsp of garlic chutney, 1 tsp of green chutney, 2 tsp of sweet chutney.
- Also, add 1 tbsp of potatoes, 1 tbsp of onions, ½ tbsp of carrot, ½ tbsp of coriander and 1 tbsp of sev evenly over it.
- Serve it with bun. You can apply butter on the bun if you want to.
Samosa
Samosa is a favourite Indian snack in most parts of the country. It is even offered to guests with tea in the evening. It is pretty simple to cook samosas. Checkout the recipe:
- 1 teaspoon powdered turmeric
- 1 teaspoon garam masala powder
- 2 teaspoon carom seeds
- Salt as required
- 2 cup peas
- 2 inch ginger
- 2 teaspoon cumin seeds
- Black pepper as required
- 1 cup chopped coriander leaves
- 2 teaspoon coriander powder
- 4 cup all purpose flour
- 4 tablespoon ghee
- 4 boiled potatoes
- 2 green chillies
- 5 cloves garlic
- 2 teaspoon red chilli powder
- 2 teaspoon dry mango powder
- Place a pan on medium flame and add oil in it. Add cumin seeds, garlic, green chillies, ginger and salt.
- Combine dry mango powder, coriander powder, coriander leaves, garam masala and turmeric with red chilli powder.
- Keep stirring the mixture and then add boiled potatoes to it. Mash the entire mixture together.
- To prepare the outside covering of the samosa, add multipurpose flour in a vessel with cumin seeds, salt and black pepper. Add ghee to it and start kneading.
- Make sure the dough is firm and cover it in a muslin cloth for half an hour.
- Roll small size balls of the dough. Flatten then with a rolling pin and then cut it in half.
- Fold the edges of semi circle into a cone. Fill the mixture in it and seal the ends properly.
- Add them in hot oil and fry until they turn golden brown.
Onion Rava Dosa
Onion Rava dosa is a wonderful dish to be found on the streets of Chennai. It's a fast food which is famous in the southern India. It is easy to make and is also very healthy to eat.
- 1 cup Rava (semolina)
- 1 cup Rice flour
- 3 green chillies, chopped
- 1/2 inch Ginger, grated
- 1/2 teaspoon Black pepper
- 1/4 teaspoon Cumin seeds
- A pinch of Asafoetida
- 3 onions, finely chopped
- 3 teaspoon cashew nuts (broken), roasted
- Salt, to taste
- Oil
- Mix the rava and rice flour with water. Stir it and form a proper batter.
- Add cumin seeds, salt and Asafoetida.
- Leave it aside and keep it in a warm place to ferment.
- Meanwhile, chop the onions, green chillies, cashews, ginger and black pepper. Put them all in one bowl.
- Take a flat pan and heat it. Grease it with a spoon of oil.
- Add some water in the batter and mix it well.
- Take some batter and spread it on the middle of the pan. Spread it an outward spiral motion.
- Sprinkle the onion and chilli mixture on it. Dot the edge with oil and cook until golden brown.
- Use a spatula and carefully fold the dosa and remove from the pan.
- Serve with chutney and sambar.
Mysore Bonda
Mysore Bonda is again a fast food delicacy which is famous in the southern part of India. It is fried and is normally consumed with coconut chutney. It is available on the streets of Mysore. Here's the recipe:
- ½ cup urad dal
- 1 to 1.5 tablespoon rice flour
- ½ teaspoon crushed black pepper
- ½ inch ginger, finely chopped
- 1 green chilli, chopped
- Chopped coconut, Curry leaves, chopped
- A pinch of Asafoetida
- Salt
- Water
- Oil for frying the vadas
- Soak the urad dal overnight. After that, grind it in a mixture until it becomes smooth and fluffy.
- Mix the batter and all the other ingredients in a bowl, except for oil.
- Meanwhile heat the oil in another vessel.
- Shape the batter like a ball and then slide it into the oil.
- Fry in medium flame until they are golden and crisp.
- Serve hot with coconut chutney.
