Situated on the top of the mountain Bhasmakuta and surrounded by the river Brahmaputra, Umananda Temple was built by King Gadadhar Singh in 1694 AD with Lord Shiva as the presiding deity.

Legend has it that it was at this place that Lord Shiva in the form of Bhayananda, burned down Kamadeva when he became a hindrance during his meditation.
