Importance of Lohri

Lohri is a Punjabi folk festival, celebrated in winters. It is mainly celebrated in the northern parts of India, especially Punjab. It is celebrated on the night before Makar Sankranti. It is celebrated as ending of winter season and welcoming of longer days to mark the sun moving to the northern hemisphere. It is mainly observed by Sikhs and Hindus residing in parts of Punjab.

Lohri is linked to Bikrami calendar and is mainly celebrated on a day before Makar Sankranti. It mainly falls in the month of Paush and in most years on 13th of January. Lohri has a special significance for farmers and agricultural community because it marks the beginning of a new financial year because, on this day, they settle the division of the products of the land between themselves and the tillers.

Lohri assumes greater significance if there has been a happy event in the family such as the birth of a child or a marriage in the past year. The family then plays host to relations and friends and merry-making is the order of the day. Most people participate in dancing the bhangra (a folk dance) to the accompaniment of the dholak.

There are many folklores about Lohri. It was celebrated at end of the traditional month when winter solstice occurs. It is the celebration of days getting longer. It is an ancient mid-winter Hindu festival, celebrated in areas of Himalayas where winters are way too colder than in other parts, and traditionally bonfires are lit in yards after few weeks of working for rabi season crops. People gather around these bonfires and sing and dance along. Punjabis celebrate this for a different reason, as a crop festival and in worship for sun deity (Surya), asking god for heat and thanking him for his return. They reverence the fire for the goddess of Lohri.

Another tale we can hear is of Dulla-Bhatti. According to which, there lived a man whose name was Abdullah Bhatti at times of Mughal emperor Akbar. He saved many girls who were being sold in the market as slaves. Children go to houses singing songs with this name included, and they receive snacks in a treat for their songs.
