Puri, Odisha
Puri in Odisha is a preferred holiday destination for many people in Eastern India. The beaches are especially wonderful during summer because of the cool breeze that comes in from the sea. Although several people go to Puri, the beaches are relatively unspoilt and you can find crabs and even marine fish swimming a little farther from the beach. During the night, you can take a stroll along the market side and buy several unique and hand made trinkets and eat fresh fish and crabs which were caught that day and are still alive. The vendors will then proceed to cook the fish just the way you want it.
A little further from Puri is the Chilka lake where you can take a boat ride and catch glimpses of dolphins. Prawns are a delicacy you will find in Puri in huge numbers and so be sure to gorge on these as these are prepared in several ways. It is better to stay in government hotels in Puri such as Panthanivas as they have the best access to the beaches and amazing gardens.
You can visit the Jagannath Temple and also the Konark Temple to appreciate the culture of the past. The Jagannath Temple is actively run so be prepared to follow several rules like washing your feet and walking barefoot inside. You'll find several monkeys here which might take away your food! Pay a priest to guide you to the inner sanctum and you'll get privileged access to see the statues inside. If you don't, then you'll have to rough it and face the hustles of the crowd.
The massive Konark temple, however, is more liberal is it is not used for active worship. It is in the shape of a giant chariot and there are beautiful gardens around it.
