Know the Difference: Gaming Mouse v/s Regular Mouse
What is the difference between a regular mouse and a gaming mouse? If you put this question to anybody who knows about the existence of computers, he/she will answer that the difference lies in the look and design.
Regular mice look basic, come in solid colours (usually black), no backlighting and don’t have much flair about them. On the other pole are gaming mice that look like they have been salvaged from the crash site of an alien spaceship; they have a robotic and futuristic design, multi-coloured LED lighting with many colour modes and come in many body colours. But their differences don’t end with their looks. It is merely the starting point.
To begin with, gaming mice have more buttons than regular mice. A regular mouse contains 3 buttons, namely the left click, right click and the scroll wheel. Gaming mice can have as many as 8 buttons each dedicated to perform a particular function in a gameplay. Secondly, gaming mouses are more sensitive than regular mice; you can click with the slightest of touches and cursor moves more quickly across the screen. Thirdly, the shape and size of gaming mice are such that they fit easily in the palm of your hand. Let us look at gaming mice in more detail to understand the difference.
Things to Look for in a Gaming Mouse
There are many features of a gaming mouse. Each feature caters to a particular aspect of gameplay. Whether a gaming mouse is good or not or whether it will suit your personal gaming style can be judged after assessing these features. Some of the features to look for in a gaming mouse are as follows:
DPI Count
DPI or Dots Per Inch is a measurement by which a computer mouse’s sensitivity is judged. High DPI count means the cursor on the screen will move more every inch you move the mouse on the mouse pad. There is nothing called an ideal DPI count. It varies from individual to individual. Some gamers prefer a low DPI count so that they can micro adjust aim and panning in the game. Mice with low DPI are fine in sandbox games which you can play at your preferred pacing. On the other hand there are gamers who prefer high DPI count, especially the ones that play shooting intensive and aggressive games. Nowadays, most gaming mice come with a special button with which you can alter the DPI level according to your preference.
Sensor Style
There are two types of mice on the basis of sensors and they are optical and laser mice. Again there is nothing called an ideal sensor for gamers, it all comes down to your preference and convenience as to which type of mouse you will use.
But most gamers prefer optical over laser as the high sensitivity of laser mice makes them jittery. You just have to keep in mind that a good sensor in a mouse will have accurate tracking across large DPI, no acceleration, no jitters, no prediction and angle snapping, low lift off distance and a fast poll rate.
You already know about DPI and acceleration and jitter are self -explanatory. Let us look at the others.
- Angle snapping happens when the mouse tries to predict your next direction of movement. It is essentially a sharp movement away from the point you want your cursor to be in.
- Lift off distance is the exact elevated point above the surface where the mouse stops tracking. The lower it is the better. Poll rate is how often the mouse reports back to the computer.
Wired or Wireless
There are advantages and disadvantages of both wired and wireless mice. A wireless mouse has no wire to obstruct movement of the mouse. Sometimes long wires get tangled and that doesn’t allow the smooth movement of the mouse. There is also the problem of the wire snapping. Wireless mouse on the other hand runs on battery but should the battery run out in a critical moment in a game, your entire mood will become sour.
Grip and Weight
Aim and shooting are two actions upon which any game stands. In city-building and strategy games, this aim and shoot become point and click but what is meant is that the mouse must be easy to manoeuver otherwise the above actions cannot be performed correctly. If the mouse is too heavy then it will be difficult for you to guide it with your hand. You cannot pan quickly and that can result in your character getting killed and you fail the mission. One other thing to consider is that the shape and design of the mouse must be such that it doesn’t slip out of the hand because the surface is too smooth or the size is too small or big that it doesn’t fit in the palm. A gamer must always choose an ergonomic mouse. It fits perfectly in the palm of your hand and is shaped such that the palm and fingers can be placed perfectly on it. Some of them even have rubber grooves on them to prevent slippage.
Types of Gameplay It Supports
There are different types of games and different types of gameplays and a mouse must support most types of gameplays if not all. In MMO games or Massively Multiplayer Online games and RTS games or Real Time Strategy games, the mouse must have multiple buttons each of which can be programmed to perform a particular function. FPS games or First Person Shooter games require that the mouse be accurate and have quick tracking features.
