Why is Diwali Celebrated?

Deepawali or Diwali is known as the festival of lights. The festival symbolises “the victory of light over darkness, good over evil, and knowledge over ignorance." It is a five-day-long festival that is celebrated throughout India but for different reasons.

In Northern India, Diwali is celebrated to honour Lord Rama's return to Ayodhya after he defeated Ravana. In Southern India, Diwali is marked as the day when Lord Krishna defeated the demon Narakasura. In Eastern India, Diwali is celebrated by worshipping Maa Kali.

In Western India, Diwali marks the day when Lord Vishnu sent the demon King Bali as the ruler of the nether world. Today Diwali has become a national festival in India and is celebrated by non-Hindu communities too.

History of Diwali in India

The history of Diwali dates back to the 7th Century when King Harsha talks about Dīpapratipadotsava, a festival where lamps were lit and newly-wed couples received gifts. Going further, the celebration of Diwali was also mentioned by the Persian traveller and historian Al Biruni. He mentioned that Hindus celebrated Diwali on the New Moon day in the month of Kartika. Other foreign travellers like Domingo Paes and Niccolò de' Conti also mentioned the celebration of Diwali in their books and notes when they travelled to India.

Diwali Rituals and Customs

Diwali is usually celebrated by lighting diyas, making rangolis, enjoying lavish meals, exchanging gifts and lighting fireworks. However, all five days of the festival, have a specific purpose:

  • Day 1 - Dhanteras: On this day, all the houses are cleaned and Lord Yama is worshipped. People buy metal objects to usher in good fortune.

  • Day 2 - Choti Diwali: On this day, clay lamps are lit and beautiful rangolis are made.

  • Day 3 - Diwali: On this day, houses are decorated with lights and lamps and Lakshmi and Ganesh Puja is done. After the puja, fireworks are lit, sweets and gifts are exchanged, followed by a delicious meal.

  • Day 4 - Govardhan Puja: On this day, Govardhan Puja is performed.

  • Day 5 - Bhai Dooj: On this day, Bhai Dooj is celebrated. This festival is dedicated to brothers and sisters where sisters pray for the long life of their brothers.

Using flowers and flower petals is another rangoli technique that has been used by many people for centuries. And it is still in trend today. The flowers that are more commonly used in rangolis are marigolds and roses. Green leaves are also used in floral rangolis for some added colour.

Paint

Many households believe in painting a rangoli at their thresholds so that they can have one throughout the year. Quick-dry oil paints are usually used to draw rangolis. They stay put for a very long time and save you the time and effort to draw one every year.

Make Your Own Rangoli with Diyas and Flowers

Option 1: Let’s begin by making the simplest rangoli. All you need are flower petals (preferably marigold) and some diya sets and candles (tealights are the best). Start by drawing two circles. Next, fill them with marigold petals. Place colourful diya sets or tealight candles at the centre. And your rangoli is ready. However, if you don’t want to stop just yet, you can extend the design too. Create another layer of the design and decorate it the way you want to.

Option 2: The next design is a pretty one that includes both flowers and diyas. And it is a fairly easy design to make too. First, draw a flower that you would wish to design with chalk. You can make a big flower or two to three small flowers. It depends on the space you have. Next, fill the design with petals. If one big flower can fill up the floor or space, it is better to stick to one. You can also use petals of contrasting colours to decorate your design. For example, yellow and orange or white and pink. You can then place candles around the flowers or in the middle of your flower.

Option 3: The third design is a little complex than the previous ones but once you decide to make it, you will surely get a hang of it. Start by drawing a star in the centre and then draw small patterns around it in the shape of leaves. You can then fill them with colours or flower petals. You can experiment with a lot of colours – there is no limit to it.
