Tips on Choosing Kurtis

Smart Styling for Short Women

Women shorter than 5’4 often have a tough time in making the best of changing trends, but as the saying goes that ‘all the good things come in small packages!’. So there are a few smart tips to style kurtis even if you are petite. For instance, if you pair your kurtis smartly with your bottom wear, you will work wonders on giving off an illusion of being taller. Slim Palazzos are smart and suit most body types, hence one with a medium flare with an ankle length will make you look taller, or you’d also pair your kurti with a medium flared skirt. It is always best to blend your top and bottom wear from the same color family, as it creates an illusion of height. Solid colours give off a vertical line, hence black, navy blue, red, and grey or purple will work well together. '

Further, even though heels can be uncomfortable for a lot of women, a few inches will only add to your style and of course height. A pair of heels with a straight cut kurti will work like a charm, and you’d always opt for wedges or platforms, if pencil heels scare you off! Experiment with skinny belts at the waist or an ultra smart kurti with a tie-up belt, matching the kurti’s color. This will define your waistline without dividing your body into two halves plainly.

Best Kurti Fabrics in Summers

Summers are always bright, sweaty and hot! It is wise to dress up according to the summer vibe and keeping in mind that your body should be comfortable and be able to breathe in the clothes you don. Working women have the choice to choose light shades with chikankari/phulkari or other embroidery work. Then there's the new innovation clothes featuring a natural fiber made from the flax plants, perfect for summers in soothing shades. This fabric is a near air conditioner as it absorbs the sweat amazingly well, plus is idea; for an ethnic look.

Khadi is yet another coarse and easy maintenance fabric which has been in the Indian apparel realm for ages and is most soothing. A Khadi Kurti, boho or tribal printed palazzos or maxi skirts are perfect for the hot summers. Rayon is an excellent choice made of cellulose, wood pulp, cotton and other synthetic materials that are natural. The fabric evaporates moisture quickly and remains dry and doesn’t stick to the body. Floral dress like kurtis or salwars in the fabric would be good too.

Bonus Tip: How to Look Slimmer in a Kurti

Source www.saree.com

A country like ours is obsessed with Kurtis and salwars, right from mad colour combinations to block prints to embellished Kurtis, however, we don’t really dwell much on the right kind of fits, befitting our body types. Here’s how you can get your Kurti style right.

  • Measurements – Very few women usually know their size and unlike abroad, we tend to usually ignore our measurements. It is wise to know your body well, re your size and fit you’re comfortable with and best to buy a size or an inch looser than the usual you go for and pair it with fitting bottoms.
  • Material – Avoid fabrics like lycra, tee-shirt material or spandex as anything that clings is a big no for your body type and would make you look fat by sticking to your body and accentuate your curves.
  • Avoid Heavy – Starched cotton, Khadican or Chanderi fabrics can make anyone look big, what with their big borders, heavy embroideries or even gota work. So stick with something simple, light and something that’s visually appealing like intricate embroidery work, thin borders or minimal Swarovski embellishments.
  • Sleeves – 3/4th sleeves or full sleeves add to the bulk, so go for short sleeves that will also make you look younger, a 5” inch is best to work around with.
  • Innerwear – Unless you invest in comfortable and befitting undergarments, even a good fitting Kurti will look out of shape. A good t-shirt bra or a lace cut one will help with a well-fitting look on a Kurti.
