Origin of Valentine's day

Source www.greatplacetowork.com

Valentine's day is around the corner and all the love birds are busy planning a romantic day for each other. This is a day to celebrate love the origin of the day is rather bloody. According to the legends, Emperor Claudius II executed two men and both were named Valentine on February 14th of different years in the 3rd century AD. The killing of these two men was honoured by the Catholic Church and the date has since been known as St. Valentine's Day.

Another story states that Saint Valentine restored sight to the blind daughter of his jailer. He wrote a letter to the jailer's daughter and signed it "Your Valentine" before his execution. It is also believed that St. Valentine helped get Christian soldiers to marry who were not allowed to marry. Later the feast of Saint Valentine was started by Pope Gelasius I in Ad 496 on February 14 to honour St. Valentine of Rome. This day was then celebrated as a day of celebrating love in the 14th and 15th centuries. Then in the 18th century, England turned it into an occasion when people started to express their love to each other by giving gifts, flowers and greeting cards which are called valentines.

As the year passed the day got sweeter and writers like Chaucer and Shakespeare romanticized it in their plays which made the day very popular throughout Britain and Europe. Today Valentine's day is one of the most celebrated days around the world. The handmade cards turned into factory-made cards in the 19th century and the rest is history.

Significance of Flowers, Teddy and Chocolates on Valentine's day

Source www.juliasflorist.com

There are a million creative ways through which you can celebrate Valentine's Day but it is almost always incomplete without pretty flowers. Flowers became a major part of Valentine's Day in the 17th century and the most favourite of all is roses. Roses are said to represent love and fondness in every way and they are known as Venus, the Goddess of Love's favourite flowers. Seeing this people started to gift beautiful flowers to those they loved and wanted to express their feeling too. Lovers of this era usually gave a single red rose to their loved ones but today a bouquet of roses or mixed flowers is sent to each other to express their love to each other.

Although flowers are the most significant part of Valentine's day it is not just about flowers. Chocolates are also a very popular gift. The Spanish explorers brought chocolate to the New World in the 17th century. Today it is the candy of choice for this day. Chocolates are known for their aphrodisiac effect and of course the taste and the texture that made it very popular among lovers.

Soft toys, especially cuddly teddy bears have a special place as well. The Valentine's teddy bear came into being in 1902 and quickly became one of the favourite gifts for men to give to their ladies. A teddy bear symbolizes hugs, warmth and love as well as it reminds you of your loved one each time you look at it. Today you can buy tons of different coloured teddies in various sizes. You can find teddies holding hearts, sweet notes written on them that shows how you feel for the person.
