What is Dandruff?

Most of us have faced this white, dry, itchy, flaky, and irritating unwanted guest on our scalp, known as dandruff. Though dry scalp and dandruff have similar main symptoms, but actually, they are two different problems. Hence, it’s important to diagnose the correct problem behind your itchy and flaky scalp so that the right treatment and precautions can follow. dandruff is a chronic condition that happens when scalp starts producing white flakes; becomes greasy, dry, and itchy and appears reddish in color. Though it’s a harmless condition, if not cared for and handled properly it can be embarrassing and can complicate into skin disease.

Dandruff is a result of Seborrheic eczema (seborrheic dermatitis), which is a common skin condition and also causes scaly patches and redness on the scalp. These yellow or white scales leave the skin as flakes and thus creating dandruff. A fungus living on your scalp called Malassezia also often causes dandruff and in few people, the impact is more than normal as it causes skin cells to reproduce more quickly than its normal pace.

Symptoms and Causes of Dandruff

The main symptoms of dandruff are – white or yellow skin flakes visible on scalp, eyebrows, mustache, beard, and shoulders. Moreover, you may feel irritation in the scalp and sometimes the feeling of itchiness in the entire or some parts of the scalp and have visible redness. The other signs of dandruff include dry, greasy, and yellowish or reddish scalp. In infants, the condition is called cradle cap and you may observe crusty and scaly scalp in the toddlers. These symptoms may aggravate due to stress and also in cold and dry weather.

The major causes of dandruff include irritated and oily skin, rare or no shampooing, Malassezia fungus that feeds on the oil on the scalp, sensitivity to hair care products, and other skin conditions like eczema and psoriasis. The skin cells keep on forming on the scalp and when these cells die, they keep on shedding as a part of the normal process. dandruff can accelerate the shedding of these cells due to which these dead skin cells bundle together and turn into white flakes. Problems with the immune system, too much usage of oil on the hair, and not cleaning the oil properly from the scalp are also a few reasons behind the growth of dandruff.

No one likes the white flakes wandering around your shoulders, mustaches, and clothes and sometimes even on your mobile. These are just the most basic and embarrassing problems faced by people suffering from dandruff, but if the problem persists then it can cause itchiness leading to scratching. This results in injured hair follicles which then results in some hair loss. Moreover, dandruff can aggravate hair loss in people suffering from male and female pattern baldness (androgenic alopecia).

Other problems include dryness, itchiness, redness, and oily scalp. Few people may feel rashes and irritation on few patches or on the entire scalp area.

Tips to Prevent and Treat Dandruff

Certain precautionary measures can help you stay away from dandruff. These easy to implement tips will prevent you from the itching and flaking of dandruff. Firstly, choose a moisturizing Anti-Dandruff shampoo and look for active ingredients in the shampoo which can protect your scalp from a dandruff-causing fungus. Clinically proven shampoos are most effective for the treatment of dandruff as they are tested for microbes which cause the flakes. Similarly, choose a conditioner that is proven in treating dandruff and dry scalp because ordinary conditioners can wash away the ingredients which prevent dandruff on your scalp.

Wash your hair minimum three times a week with Anti-Dandruff shampoo and apply Anti-Dandruff moisturizer. Don’t scratch your scalp else it can damage the skin and would make the flakes more visible and horrible. Dry indoor air can dry out your scalp during winters, so use a dehumidifier to keep your skin and scalp moisturized. Bathing in very hot water can strip away the moisture from your skin and water temperature between 36 to 38 degrees in winters is adequate. Make sure that your winter caps are breathable which allows some air to flow inside. dandruff is a recurring condition, so don’t stop the use of shampoo even if the flakes reduce on the scalp, else they may come back.

Read the instructions mentioned on the bottle of the shampoo carefully and follow them. Also, if you feel that a particular shampoo is losing its effectiveness after a certain time, then you can switch between two different types of Anti-Dandruff shampoos.

Apart from the above-mentioned precautions and remedies, few lifestyle and home remedies for preventing dandruff include -

Managing stress:

As excess mental stress affects your health and makes you prone to different diseases. Thus, stress can act as a catalyst for the growth of dandruff.

Eat Healthily:

A complete diet that consists of B vitamins, zinc, and certain fats help to prevent dandruff.

Get some sunlight:

Spending a few minutes soaking the rays of sun early in the morning when the sunrays are not too harsh, is beneficial in prevention from dandruff.

Less use of Hair Styling products:

Excess use of hair styling products like hair serum, hair gel, hair oil, etc. can build up a layer on your hair and scalp, thus making them oilier which is also one of the reasons behind the growth of flakes and dandruff.
