Celebrate This Durga Puja with Your Boyfriend
Durga Puja, also known as Durgotsava, is an annually celebrated Hindu festival within the Indian landmass that is associated with the divine Hindu goddess, Durga. It is very significant in the states of West Bengal, Tripura, Assam and Odisha. The festival is celebrated in the Hindu calendar month of Ashwin, which occurs in September or October of the Gregorian calendar. It is a festival that lasts multiple days and features baroque stage and temple decorations, performance arts, scripture recitation and processions.
Marked by a battle between Goddess Durga and the deceptive, shape-shifting and powerful buffalo demon Mahishasura, Durga Puja is celebrated in the joy of her emerging victorious. Thus, the festival symbolizes the victory of good over evil but also symbolises all of life and creation.
Along with Goddess Durga, other deities like Lakshmi, Ganesha, Saraswati and Kartikeya are also revered. These other deities are believed to be children of Durga in the Bengali tradition. God Shiva(Durga's husband) is also worshipped during this festival. Marking Durga’s battle against evil, the festival begins on the first day with Mahalaya. beginning on the sixth day (Sasthi), the goddess is welcomed, Durga worshipping and celebrations start in baroquely decorated tents and temples hosting the statues. Saraswati and Lakshmi are worshipped on the following days. The festival finally ends of the tenth day of Dusshera (Vijaya Dashami), when with music, drum beats and chants, the procession is carried out by Hindu communities. They carry the colourful clay statues to a river or ocean for immersing them, as a form of goodbye and her return to the holy and divine land, Mount Kailash.
