The Festival of Ganesh Chaturthi Explained
Also known as Vinayak Chaturthi , Ganesh Chaturthi is a Hindu festival celebrating the birth of Lord Ganesha. It falls in the months of August or September. The festival is marked by the installation of Ganesha clay idols privately in homes, prominent temples or publicly on large pandals (also called temporary stages). Along with setting up pandals , prayers and fasting for a day are also observed. Offerings and prasad from the daily prayers is distributed from the pandal to the local community. The prasad include sweets such as modak as it is believed to be a favorite of Lord Ganesh.
The festival is celebrated for ten days and on the tenth day, Ganpati idol is carried in a public gathering with music and groups of people chanting prayers, then immersed in a nearby water body such as a river or sea. If we talk about Mumbai alone, around 150,000 statues are immersed on an annual basis. After the clay idol dissolves , Ganesha is believed to return to Mount Kailash to Parvati and Shiva.
Celebrating the God of New Beginnings the World Over
We all know Lord Ganesha as the God of New Beginnings and the Remover of Obstacles in anyone’s life, as well as the god of wisdom and intelligence. History Of Ganesh Chaturthi
The history of this festival cannot be traced to exact date but it is believed, it became a major social and public event during the reign of Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. Two hymns of Rigveda have also mentioned Lord Ganesh. Lord Ganesh appears in the medieval Puranas in the form of "god of success, obstacle remover”. A number of images of him were seen by Archeologists studying 7th century or earlier. For instance, artifacts at temples of Hindus, Buddhists, and Jains such as at the Ellora Caves show Ganesha seated with major Hindu goddess (Laxmi), which date back to between 5th and 8th-century.
The Rituals of Ganesh Chaturthi
Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations include four rituals.
- Pranapratistha: It's the first step or ritual of the Ganesh Chaturthi. During this, a statue or figurine of Lord Ganesha in brought at the center of the pandal around which people celebrate by singing and dancing and playing with colors all around.
- Shodasopachara: The second ritual involves worshiping Lord Ganesha by singing various aartis and chantings.
- Uttarpuja: After the above two rituals are concluded, the idol of Lord Ganesha is moved from his original position and is moved around by people for everyone to take his blessings.
- Ganpati Visarjan: The final stage is of Ganpati Visarjan in which Lord Ganesha is visarjit into a water body such as a river, sea or the ocean. It is believed that Lord Ganesha gets united with his family after travelling across seas.

A laddu or modak is supposed to be the signature food of Lord Ganesha and something very dear to him. Hence it’s served in various forms in recipes during Ganesh Chaturthi. Some of the popular Ganesh Chaturthi foods include karanji, which is a sweet dish from Karnataka. In southern states of India modak or laddu, vundrallu , panakam , vadapappu (soaked moong lentils) and chalividi (a mixture of cooked rice, flour and jaggery ) are offered to Ganesha. - Panchakajjaya: It is an offering made to Lord Ganesha during this festival in parts of Karnataka. It is a mixture of crushed coconut, roasted Bengal gram powder, sugar, ghee, and sesame. Different versions of panchakajjaya are made.

- Goan Varan Bhaat: It is yet another simple dal made with toor dal and coconut. This is also served with cooked rice.
- Sabudana Thalipeeth: This is a savory pancake made from tapioca pearls. It is also eaten during fasts.

The Signature Food for Ganesh Chaturthi: Types of Modak You can Offer to Lord Ganesha
During this festive season, Modak, which is a sweet dumpling is available in different types. The outer layer is prepared with rice flour, wheat flour and the inner filling is mainly of coconut, jaggery, and dry fruits but a lot of different variants are prepared now.

- Fried Modak: It is a variation where modaks are fried rather than steamed. In this the outer covering is made from whole wheat flour and hence it is bit dense as compared to the ones made out of finely milled flour (also called maida).
