Interview Dress Do’s and Don’t’s- How to and How Not to Dress When Attending the Interview:
Getting ready for your interview involves lots of groundwork. Brushing through the topics relevant to your job, preparing yourself to look bright, and gathering the confidence often take a lot of time. Your looks matter a lot, and this is why many would spend hours deciding what to wear. Here are the do’s and don’t’s of the interview dress code.
What are the Do’s?
Here's what you must do to make a good impression -
1. Go One Notch Up:
It is easy to get the idea of what the firm lets you wear if you get placed there. If the firm doesn’t mind wearing casuals every day to work, you must wear business casuals for the interview. If business casuals are what you are supposed to wear each day, then you need to wear formals. When it comes to formal wear every day, ensure you stick to a two-piece tailored suit. When there is no idea about the dress code of the employees, the tailored suit is apt for the interview.
2. Do Wear What Makes You Comfortable:
Your choice of dress should be comfy to wear. Especially women, who want to give a try on the business western wear, your interview schedule isn’t the right time to try it. Men or women, it is essential to wear something that makes you feel comfy. For women, who have the skirts, the length should allow them to sit comfortably. The same is applicable for men, the trousers should not bulge at the bottom. The size of your attire is of prime importance. Wear something that fits perfectly, not the tight-fitting garments, or the loose garments. To put it simply, you should look pleasing and easy-going with your dress.
3. Do Focus on the Footwear Too
Where many go wrong is at the choice of footwear. Men, obviously, it must be a formal shoe. Your love for sports shoes and fashion pieces of footwear finds no place here. Plain shoes that look classy are mandatory for interviews. You can either choose to stick to black shoes. Brown shoes too are good choices. If you want to choose formal shoes in other colours, ensure they are apt for the colour of your dress. For instance, if you choose to wear beige coloured shoes, then your shirt must be of the same colour tone. Also, your belt should be the same colour as your shoes. So, it is a good option to try black belts and shoes. They go with the majority of colours. For women, high heels and squeaky shoes are a big no.
4. Do Wear Something That is in the Trend:
While you cannot try the fashion clothes, that does not mean you need to stick to old fashioned dresses. Try from the different formal brands, and choose something that matches the current vogue. Women, when choosing ethnic wears should remember finding something formal, and that stays in trend always. For instance, Salwar and Kurtis are professional and are considered apt choices. When you go for old school dresses, you might be considered as one who does not update yourself to suit the changing needs.
5. Cover the Tattoos with Your Dresses:
It is an individual choice to go for tattoos or piercings. But, it is a good choice to keep them covered when you attend an interview. The simple way is to choose dresses that have full sleeves and a collar. They cover everything except the face.
The Don’t’s You Must Know:
Here's what you must avoid doing or you might end up creating a lousy impression -
1. Don’t Wear Loud Colours:
Formals or business casuals, the tone of the dress should be professional. Your dress speaks a lot about your personality and attitude. Ensure the choice of colours is not gaudy or loud. Check for any work on the dress that can be gaudy or too attractive. Colours like beige, white, blue, and black are perfect for interview dresses. A dignified look is often associated with these colours. An additional advantage is that you need not look for belts, shoes, and bags for these colours. Black is the comfortable option to go with these colours.
2. A Big No to the Stained and Creased Dresses:
Carrying yourself in a dignified manner is possible only when the dress you put is clean and well –ironed. As you might choose subtle and soft colours, even the small stains look too big. The ground rule is to look clean and professional. So, check for any stains. Remove them, or find another dress. Iron the shirts, trousers, kurtas or anything that you have chosen to wear well the previous day, and fold perfectly. If you want to try it after pressing, ensure there are no creases.
3. Use Your Perfume Wisely:
While it isn’t a problem to put on your perfume, you should not overdo it. Your cologne too should follow the same instruction. Usually, interviews are conducted in small rooms which are completely closed. Strong and too much perfume can cause irritation, which often reflects in the way the questions are thrown at you. Generally, people do not like the odour filling the room, even if it is not your interview room. Keep to a limit, if you want to make an impression.
4. Don’t be Flashy:
Using accessories is a way to show yourself beautiful and impressive. But when you are scheduled an interview, your accessories should be kept off. Though you can use the ones that would fit your attire, do not use the heavy accessories. The stones, embellishments, huge earrings, and flashy watches are not meant for interviews. Keep your chains short and thin. Bangles that make a clinking sound whenever you move should not be used for interviews. Often men think that the area of accessories is meant for women. On the contrary, it is time for men to check for their watches and wallets. The people who conduct interviews have keen eyes. So, you need to be careful about everything you carry to the firm.
The dress you choose to wear for your interview speaks a volume about your personality. This is why the firms that are hiring focus on how you dress for an important day. Stick to these rules to bag the prize.

Tips for Making the Best Interview Impression
When considering how to dress for an interview, use your best judgment and do not overthink it. You should choose clothes that make you feel comfortable and confident. In addition to getting your interview attire ready the night before, also gather Interview location or directions. You can take your smartphone but make sure it's on mute or vibrate during your interview. It avoids the risk of getting a distracting loud text alert or phone call mid-interview.
