Why Is Kanjak Celebrated?

Kanjak is a ritual celebrated on the eighth and ninth day of Navratri. Nine girls who are said to represent the nine forms of Goddess Durga are worshipped during this ritual.

According to Hindu scriptures, the Earth was distressed by a demon king called Kalasura. The devas(gods) found they were unable to defeat Kalasura and so asked Goddess Durga for help. Goddess Durga took the form of a young girl and challenged the demon. Kalasura thought that a little girl could not defeat him. Thinking, he could handle a girl all by himself, he asked his guards to move away. This overconfidence made him lose as she immediately pulled her sword and killed the cruel demon.
